About Juniors

Message from the Junior Chairman

Welcome to Caldy Junior section, one of the biggest and most successful junior sections in Cheshire RFU. Our age groups range from under 13 through to under 16 plus two girls teams at under 15 and under 18.

We play matches most Sunday mornings with evening training down at Paton Field in the middle of the week. The size of the age groups ranges from 30 up to 45, some putting out two teams every week; each team is coached by RFU qualified coaches, supported by a team manager, all of whom are parent volunteers. Our whole approach is to create a fun and safe environment for boys and girls to develop their sporting talents, to practice good sportsmanship and to revel in the camaraderie of team sport.

In recent years three of our teams have won the Cheshire Cup at their age level, the top honour within Cheshire RFU. Last year our Under 14s successfully defended their trophy. Each squad boasts a host of District and Cheshire County squad players, and with our “one club” ethos we often have first team players coaching our junior players.

As a section we host each year the Caldy Junior Festival, which has become the premier junior festival in the North of England with teams from Cheshire, Lancashire and North Wales competing alongside visiting teams from further afield – in recent times we had teams from Yorkshire, Wolverhampton, Ireland and Canada!

We now have a new and dynamic girls section that trains on Wednesday evenings and plays matches on Sunday afternoons. From a few hardy souls breaking the mould a couple of years ago, the girls section is now an integral part of the club, highly successful in its own right and giving increasing numbers of girls an opportunity to play a sport that is often not available to them at school. Indeed, we currently have a number of girls representing Cheshire and the North of England. The North of England Girls’ Tens Competition held at Caldy in May has very quickly become an established event in girls’ rugby. Last season we hosted a touring team from the USA.

If you are interested in joining us to play some rugby, come down any Sunday morning to see what goes on,drop me a line at the email address below– you will find a very welcoming atmosphere both on and off the pitch….the clubhouse is a vital part of our club, with good beer (parents!), good food and good company in generous supply.

To those existing players and parents, I look forward to seeing you all over the following months – here’s to another successful season!
