Stars of the Week: Joe Byrne, Ben Way Next Session - ??The Lions went to Hoylake for a pre-festival work-out with our strong and competitive rivals from Hoylake and Macclesfield, drawing one game and winning the other two. We also sent a team to Old Anselmians who have an enthusiastic but small group of under-eights - which was sportingly bolstered by Harry and Aonghas, who showed no mercy in crossing their clubmates' try-line! All the Caldy players - and the Anselmians - managed to bring more inventiveness amd purpose to their attacking play than had been on display at Murrayfield the day before, and this resulted in a high-scoring game that the children and parents on both sides enjoyed, and that Caldy won fairly comfortably. The quality of our defence, however, was a bit disappointing, and is something that needs to be worked on before the festivals come around. We didn't put enough effort into getting back into effective, on-side positions, and this cost us possession on too many occasions and meant we didn't turn-over any ball. Stars of the Week Joe Byrne and Ben Way managed to balance attacking and defensive duties and, together with our friendly and sporting hosts, helped make a Mothers' Day trip to Eastham very enjoyable. One mother from Eastham had spent her morning making a stew - which was very much appreciated in the clubhouse after the games. Delicious. The Tigers and Jaguars hosted Chester, and after being well entertained at Chester back in October, it was great to see Chester turn out at Caldy for four matches with 2 strong squads. Match 1. As seems to be a regular occurrence for the Tigers on a Sunday Morning several of the players needed a cold shower to wake them up as Chester went into an early 3–0 lead. Caldy fought back well in the second half to narrowly lose 8-7. Match 2. In the second match the Jaguars seemed to use the downhill advantage to great effect. A solid team performance with field positioning being the orders given by the coach. Notable runs from Charlie Prothero, Ollie Thompson and Cameron Jacobie gave Caldy a commanding half time lead which was stabilised in the second half with some great play by Edward Chisholm, James Maxwell and Henry Ruddock. Match result 7-5 to Caldy. Match 3 was again a very close affair with great play from Will Edwards and David Barry. Using the speed of Josh Samaroo and Will Lawrence Caldy Tigers saw their fortunes change giving them a positive result 6-5. Match 4. This saw the Jaguars take on the festival side from Chester which looked well organised and ready to play rugby. As with the first match, Chester went into an early lead. Some field-position changes saw good improvements in the Caldy team structure and both Jack Taylor and Daniel Kennedy made some good runs. Bright play saw Ollie Thompson following up a ball touched down before the line to pick up and place over the line to confirm the score. Chester did well and ended up winners 7–5. The Chester players, coaches, and parents were excellent and we look forward to the fixture again next year. Caldy boys obviously enjoy their rugby and it is a pleasure to coach a team which wants to work together. About Our Training Sessions
We train on Sundays, 10:30 - 12:00, usually at Paton Field, but we also play matches against other local clubs, either at home or away, and all are welcome to join us, even - or especially! - if you're new to rugby. For the Under-8s, children should be 7 years old as of September 6. We offer two "taster" sessions so you can try it out; after that, we ask you to register with the club (info on costs is available here). We hope you find all the information you require on this page. If not then please contact the U8s manager who will do his best to answer all your queries.
About Tag Rugby
Players wear belts with tags attached by velcro on either hip; "tackling" is done by pulling a tag off the belt. There is no contact: no tackling, no fending-off, no barging, etc. The key skills are running with the ball, passing, catching, and defensive organisation, which makes it a fast and exciting game to play. The rules of the game can be found here.
At Caldy, we want our children to play a fast and intelligent game. Organized, committed and pressurising in defence; fast and skillful in attack - and enjoying and taking pride in their contribution to the team.
What do I need?Football/rugby boots and a water bottle are a must. Metal rugby studs are recommended as they cause less damage in case of accidents; these can be bought separately at any sports shop. Your child should wear sporty clothes appropriate to the time of year. The more clothes they have the better as we can take layers off if necessary. It gets very cold in winter so hats and rugby-type gloves would be beneficial. When representing the club in matches your child should wear Caldy club kit which can be bought at the Clubhouse Shop. Tag-rugby is a non-contact sport, so gumshields are not necessary. Whether children wear gum shields or not at training is a matter of parental choice. TrainingA structure has been put into place to develop children through fun active participation. When training at home the format of the session will be:
Rewards and SanctionsWe award trophies and certificates each week to boys and girls who have worked hard during the session. The trophy is theirs to keep for one week but needs to be returned the following week. The certificate they get to keep.
If a child proves to be disruptive to the session we will ask them to have time out and go back to their parent. We will then ask the child if they would like to rejoin the session. Our Coaching Team
